Full Description:

Professor Afsaruddin received her Ph.D. in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Johns Hopkins University. Her fields of specialization include religious and political thought of Islam, Qu'ramic hermeneutics, hadith criticism, exegetical, legal and ethical perspectives on jihad and martyrdom, Muslim attitudes toward the People of the Book, Islam and religious pluralism, and gender relations.

Professor Afsaruddin is Chair and Professor of the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Cultures at Indiana University, Bloomington. She has taught at Harvard University and the University of Notre Dame, and was a visiting scholar at the Centre for Islamic Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, UK.

She is the author or editor of four books, including, for example, "The First Muslims: History and Memory" and "Excellence and Precedence: Medieval Islamic Discourse on Legitimate Leadership." She has also written more than 50 research articles, book chapters and encyclopedia articles.
