The Federalist Society is excited to welcome Professor Helen Alvar? from the Antonin Scalia School of Law at George Mason University to William & Mary on February 7th during the Lunch Hour! Professor Alvar?'s current research focuses on the cramped, identity-politics view of religious liberty. The discussion will largely focus on how Christian communities and institutions have veered from their more traditional view of religious liberty - that Christian communities and institutions are intended to be living witnesses to the reality of the living Christ - into the pervasive world of identity politics. In doing so, Professor Alvar? will seek a revival of the traditional notions of "Freedom of the Church": the idea that the ?freedom of religion? belongs not only to individuals but also to institutions, associations, communities, and congregations. Just as every person ought to be free from official coercion when it comes to religious practices or professions, religious institutions are entitled to govern themselves, and to exercise appropriate authority, free from official interference.
