[PAST EVENT] Sylvia Chong: Fifty Shades of Yellow: Fetishizing Culture and Race in Crazy Rich Asians
Sylvia Chong is Associate Professor of English and Asian American Studies at the University of Virginia. She is also the Director of the Asian American Studies Program and Associate Director of the American Studies Program. Prof. Chong's work focuses on the intersection of race, sexuality, transnational and diaspora identities in East Asia and North America. Her work explores the ideological effects and motivations of representations of Asians in American film, including around the US-Vietnam War.
Her talk will present material from her newest project, entitled "Fifty Shades of Yellow: Fetishizing Culture and Transnationalizing Race in Crazy Rich Asians"
Prof. Chong's lecture and visit to AMES and APIA courses are funded by the Decolonizing Humanities Project.
