Wrapping up W&M’s Year of the Arts in 2024 and moving into Year of the Environment in 2025, the Batten School & VIMS and the Department of Theatre & Performance are pleased to collaborate on and present, “Rollover” on Feb. 15 and 22.

This is a FREE-admission, one-act play that is set on a fictional barrier island called Rollover. It tells a powerful story that was heavily researched by the playwright following the impact of Hurricane Ike in 2008 on a barrier island south of Galveston, TX and is based on interviews with the community members. The story addresses the difficult decisions families and communities have to make as sea level rises and barrier island communities rollover, plus the aftermath of a devasting Cat 3 storm from the perspective of a family, whose members include the island’s Mayor and a USGS Coastal Scientist, who are siblings. A creative way to tell the story of science. I can promise you an audience experience that is highly-engaging— be warned, you will experience a hurricane and its aftermath!

Performers are VIMS scientists and students, and W&M faculty and students, with both science and theatre interests and experience. The play is directed by the Chair of the Department of Theatre & Performance Holly Maples and has been co-directed by her Batten School & VIMS counterpart, Nicole Millette (a scientist-actor in her own right, who can currently be seen in “Death Trap” with the Williamsburg Community Players in Williamsburg). There will be an audience talk-back following each performance with VIMS scientists about sea level rise, barrier islands and coastal communities.

All donations received benefit the VIMS Graduate Student Endowment.
