[PAST EVENT] Anthropology Brown Bag: "Negotiating Funding & the Techno-Politics of Citizenship in the Mosquitia"

Supporting the strengthening of customary land tenure institutions in places of high biodiversity like the rainforests of the Honduran Mosquitia has become a common practice among donor agencies working toward integrative conservation. In this talk, Dr. Fernando Galeana Rodriguez explores the pressures created when community governance functions become dependent on external funding. Seeing elections to Indigenous councils as a form of techno-politics brings attention to how physical and social infrastructures shape the landscape in which community members negotiate these dependencies. For these local actors, contesting dependency is about limiting external influence and a medium to assess the values and practices informing a Miskitu polity, contributing to the formation of new forms of citizen engagement.
