In 2018, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science welcomed a new, state-of-the-art research vessel, the R/V Virginia. The Virginia is the most modern, most capable marine research vessel in its size class in the U.S and is the flagship vessel of VIMS’ fleet. The capabilities provided by this new vessel will allow VIMS scientists and others to make new and exciting discoveries throughout the Chesapeake Bay and along the Atlantic Coast well into the future. Join VIMS’ Director of Marine Operations, Stewart Lamerdin, as he provides a history of the use of research vessels throughout the world and at VIMS, culminating with the newly constructed Virginia. Mr. Lamerdin will help us understand what defines a research vessel, how they are utilized to understand our marine ecosystems, and what makes the Virginia a truly unique asset to VIMS and the commonwealth.
