Multistrain dynamics: Modeling dengue fever

Dengue fever is a multistrain mosquito-borne subtropical disease that exhibits complex oscillatory outbreaks. I will present a multistrain model for dengue using ordinary differential equations and show that it exhibits similar oscillations. I will also present a metapopulation model in which traveling wave like behavior results from migration between different regions, which is consistent with epidemiological data. Although not involving marine science, my talk will demonstrate the power of dynamical systems modeling to provide insights about populations.
