As has been fruitfully explored by ecocritical scholars in recent decades, narration is a powerful tool for making sense of environmental change, advocating for environmental justice and modeling new modes of coexistence. This lecture focuses on Laura Conti's Una lepre con la faccia di bambina (A Rabbit With the Face of a Girl, 1978), analyzing dioxin as a protagonist that is material and deeply tied to bodily natures. The tension it creates between time, perception and representation requires a narration that is particularly speculative, so that narrating subjects might find space for creative engagement with normal life as it shifts.
