The innovation of iGEM: Understanding COVID-19 and Predicting the Next Pandemic

The award-winning W&M International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) team uses the transformative field of synthetic biology to address global issues. This year the W&M iGEM team is investigating novel COVID-19 therapeutics and improved models to predict future outbreaks.

Alumni, parents, family and friends are welcome to join. Time will be available for Q&A.

About Professor Saha:

Dr. Margaret Saha, Chancellor Professor of Biology, is a molecular developmental biologist. Her National Institutes of Health-funded research focuses on the genetic mechanisms that control the development of the brain, particularly how embryos are able to recover from injury so effectively. Using an amphibian model system, she and her students focus on using computational and  “next-generation” sequencing technologies to identify genes and cellular processes that promote regeneration in the nervous system.  Prof. Saha is the Director of the William & Mary HHMI Undergraduate Science Education Grant  Program and has served as the faculty advisor to the W&M iGEM team for the past seven years.  Building on their experience from iGEM, she and her team of students are interested in applying emerging engineering approaches to important biological problems.
