"Exclusionary Legacies: Women, Gender, and Race in Higher Education"

Mary Kelley (University of Michigan) 10:00-11:00

Mia Bay (Rutgers University) 11:15-12:15

Louise Morley (University of Sussex) 1:30-2:30

During the next two years William & Mary is celebrating the 50th-year anniversary of the admission of African Americans to William & Mary (2017), and the 100-year anniversary of white women?s acceptance as students (2018). This symposium speaks to both of these firsts and interrogates the desegregation of higher education as it relates to women.

The panelists cover an expansive period, with Professor Mary Kelley focusing on gender and higher education in Early America, Professor Mia Bay drawing our attention to nineteenth and twentieth-century developments in the United States in relation to higher education and African American women, and Professor Louise Morley finishing the day with her transnational analyses of the current neoliberal era in higher education.
