As a long-standing tradition, the Bishop James Madison Society hosts a Last Lecture at the end of every year to recognize a retiring faculty member who has made exceptional contributions to W&M. The Last Lecture is an opportunity for the selected professor to share their wisdom and departing thoughts with the university community.

The Bishop James Madison Society is honored that Professor Joanne Braxton, the Frances L. & Edwin L. Cummings Professor of the Humanities, Africana Studies, and English, will provide the 2018 Last Lecture after her distinguished thirty-eight years at W&M. Professor Braxton is an outstanding, intrepid scholar, whose wholehearted commitment to the art of sharing knowledge has left William & Mary changed for the better.
