In Anglophone DH contexts, language is typically an overlooked axis of diversity, and English is the unspoken measure of what's possible. It can be a struggle to explain that analyses that are "easy" in English (the best-resourced language in terms of corpora and tools) are often time-consuming at best and unfeasible at worst when working with other languages. This talk will explore some of those gaps compared to English, drawing on examples from the Data-Sitters Club project and a non-English DH course at Stanford, and will propose concrete steps we can take around both resource development and advocacy for multilingual DH.

Quinn Dombrowski is the Academic Technology Specialist in the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages at Stanford University and is a specialist in Slavic linguistics and library and information sciences. They are also the co-vice president/president elect of the Association for Computers and the Humanities.

The talk will be held on Zoom:
