[PAST EVENT] Chemistry Seminar: Encoded in Vibrational Spectra: Insights into the Spectroscopy of Water

Professor Anne B. McCoy discusses recent work about connections between proton transfer processes and hydrogen bonding and vibrational frequencies and intensities. The presentation will draw from reported vibrational spectra for systems either containing intra- or intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The focus of the talk will be on how we can use an array of methods, including harmonic treatments, vibrational perturbation theory in internal coordinates and analysis of electronic wave functions to unravel the insights that can be obtained from the spectra of these molecular systems. Implications of these studies into the condensed phase dynamics and spectroscopy will also be discussed.
Ryan J. DiRisio '17 earned his Tribe chemistry stripes in the McNamara Lab before starting grad school at Univ. of Washington. DiRisio is available to chat with students about life after graduating from W&M, including exploring graduate studies. Email [[chemistry]] to be included in the zoom student chat from 12 noon - 1 pm.
