Prof. Abdurraqib holds a doctorate in English from UW-Madison and is currently working on a project that looks at the social and discursive co-optation of narratives by Muslim women in the West. Dr. Abdurraqib's public lecture, Writing Muslim Women's Lives: Post 9/11 Personal Narratives by Muslim Women," will be from her manuscript in progress. Her book focuses on the fraught negotiations of post-9/11 Muslim women writers in their attempts to construct believable, honest protagonists that are both female and Muslim in the face of increasing demands by Western readerships for "testimonial witnesses." More specifically, Dr. Abdurraqib's latest project argues that for Western audiences, the quest to know the other is no longer simply recreational it is, for some, a matter of life and death, a burgeoning socio-political context that has effectively created a demand for a very specific, and narrowed type of literature produced by Muslims in general but women in particular.
