Abstract: We now have the ability to construct increasingly complex artificial quantum systems, with profound implications for science and technology. Perhaps the most ambitious goal on this path is that of a quantum computer capable of performing useful quantum computations (that is, out-performing anything possible with a classical computer). I will discuss the status and recent work towards this goal in one of the most promising implementations: spins in silicon. Except for perhaps concrete, silicon is the most studied material on earth. Yet there is still much to learn about how it behaves at the quantum level - and still surprises to be found. I will also discuss other possibilities for man-made quantum systems, specifically some of our recent results in quantum electromechanics, from controlling single phonons to making new states of matter.
