Join our community discussion of health literacy in our community. RSVP to [[efmiller]] appreciated.

Imagine being sick or in pain and not being able to describe your symptoms to your doctor. Imagine getting prescribed critical medication, but not understanding how or how often to take it. The National Center for Educational Statistics estimates there are nearly 3,500 adults in Williamsburg and James City County, and more than 106,000 in Hampton Roads, with below basic literacy, meaning they struggle to read simple instructions or complete common forms. Literacy is a stronger predictor of an individual's health status than income, employment status, education level and racial or ethnic group. Come learn and discuss health literacy in our community with Sara Nye, the H.E.A.L. (Health Education And Literacy) program coordinator at local nonprofit Literacy for Life.
