Hematodinium perezi causes disease and death in blue crabs along the eastern seaboard and Gulf coast of the USA. Infections exhibit a seasonal cycle in the blue crab host, but routes of transmission are unknown. Using uninfected blue crabs as sentinels, I have found transmission occurs within 3 days of exposure, and infections develop rapidly over 10-14 days. The proportion of new infections in a population over time is highly variable in the seaside bays and varies from 0.9 - 8% of the resident crab population, making this organism an endemic and persistent pathogen in the seaside bays of the Delmarva. The development of this sentinel methodology has broad application to studying disease ecology in this system and in other pathogens that infect crabs.

There is no charge for this presentation. Seating limited to 60 people.
