How did the U.S.-led intervention in Afghanistan go from defeating the Taliban in 2001 to essentially handing the country back to the Taliban, in a chaotic withdrawal that we witnessed in August 2021? This lecture is a summary of a seminar I teach on “State Building in Afghanistan,” where students dig into different aspects of the West’s twenty-year engagement in Afghanistan to understand how $2.3 trillion in U.S. defense spending and 2,401 military personnel sacrifices failed to build a stable democracy. We will discuss our initial takeaways and lessons learned.
