On land, it is easy to distinguish the plants from the animals, but this is not always true in the sea. Many of the one celled plankton are mixotrophic, that is they are photosynthetic but also prey on other organisms, combining plant and animal life styles. Mixotrophy is widespread and ecologically important in the sun-lit upper ocean. Many harmful algae are mixotrophs. Biological oceanographers and ecosystem modelers are just starting to quantify the effect of mixotrophy on food web structure and food web efficiency in the oceans.
