One teaspoon of seawater contains about 5 million microbes. While most of these microbes are bacteria, in the deep ocean a mysterious group of organisms called the Archaea become very abundant. The activities of this 'third domain' of life are important for keeping the ocean ecosystem functioning. This talk will discuss the discovery of these mysterious organisms and the latest research describing their abundance and activity in the ocean and coral reefs. Research from two recent field expeditions from Cuba will also discuss the challenges and opportunities for 'science diplomacy' in this unique country.
