Oysters have been plagued by a long history of diseases, with clams having faced their own challenges as well. Pioneering science has led to advances in management and areas like selective breeding that have brought major parasitic diseases largely under control. In recent years, however, it has become clear that management strategies designed to protect the aquaculture industry from diseases may be doing more harm than good. At the same time, we have realized that our view of shellfish health is out of touch with a changing marine environment. This presentation will explore this shifting landscape and consider a new paradigm for understanding and managing the health of key shellfish aquaculture species.
