The nature of the crime, for which Pontius Pilate had Jesus of Nazareth crucified, has long been a matter of controversy. Yet, recent scholarship on Roman courts and the legal cultures of provincial contexts has the potential to clarify the judicial framework in which Pilate was operating. In light of such scholarship, this lecture examines the New Testament Gospel accounts for Jesus’ final days in Jerusalem with the aim of identifying the legal logic of his trial before Pilate.
