The president and program speakers will join with members of the W&M and Williamsburg communities to dedicate Hearth: Memorial to the Enslaved. The event program is designed to reinforce our commitment to acknowledging our history, thank all those who contributed time and resources to the project for their dedication and generosity, reinforce W&M’s values and its commitment to representation and inclusion and to celebrate completion of this project as a space for community reflection.
In addition, throughout the program we will acknowledge those enslaved by William & Mary, share the impact of the memorial on students and faculty and share music and poetry inspired by the project and the event. Local church and William & Mary bells will ring to signal the start of the program which will begin with land and slavery acknowledgements, pouring of libations around the memorial, roll call of enslaved peoples, speaking program and to close, a ribbon cutting.
Weather Update: Event will take place as planned at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 7.
