Student life at W&M offered a variety of experiences. For many alumni who identify as LGBTQ+ and/or as people of color, experiences of growth and learning may have been accompanied by trauma. Join the William & Mary Alumni Association as we partner with Dr. Rufus Tony Spann, a culturally responsive therapist, and fellow alumni in the mental health industry to acknowledge the hurt, discuss steps towards healing and find ways to use your lived experiences to positively impact the future of William & Mary.
Since we know that it is not possible to unpack or rebuild the relationship alumni have with their alma mater in 90 minutes, we will spend time during this session talking through what future trauma-informed conversations should look like.
More about our facilitator:
Dr. Rufus Tony Spann is a nationally certified school psychologist, licensed professional counselor, yoga teacher and reiki master. Dr. Spann owns the private practice You in Mind Psychotherapy and Consultation, which focuses on providing culturally responsive therapy. He also is part of a research team looking to develop a new instrument that measures clients’ perceptions of whether counselors are effective in their ability to discuss the contextual dimensions of race, ethnicity and culture (REC) with clients.
This virtual event is brought to you by the Alumni Engagement Inclusion Initiatives team.
