The Virginia State Capitol was designed by Thomas Jefferson and first occupied in 1788 by Virginia's General Assembly, organized in 1619 as America's oldest elected representative legislature. During the Civil War 1861-1865, the Confederate Congress also met here.

Election Day is the perfect time to take a private tour of the Virginia State Capitol with other W&M Alumni! Take advantage of the state holiday and school closures to learn more about our state Capitol and the rich history in our backyard. This tour is appropriate for school-aged children as well as for adults.

The tour is scheduled for 11am - 12pm, however plan to meet your fellow alumni at 10:45am in the Rotunda on the 2nd floor. Plan to use the West entrance on the Capitol Square. Participants should arrive by 10:30am in order to allow time for security screenings conducted by the Capitol Police. Participants will pass through metal detectors and are encouraged to leave bulky items in your car or at home. Personal items carried inside the Capitol will be screened. Additional parking and entrance instructions can be found on the State Capitol website.

Registration is required for this event and is free of charge. After the tour, there will be an optional lunch at a local restaurant within walking distance of the Capitol. Lunch will be pay as you go.
