Meg Harvey: Multilinguism at the Brafferton Indian School

Multilinguism at the Brafferton Indian School
New research about the Brafferton Indian School provides a lens through which to view the complexity and variability of tribal enrollment and engagement on the 18th-century campus of William & Mary. Founded to serve the needs of the British colonial empire by teaching English to select youth of tributary tribes, the English and Indigenous nations each sought to solidify mutually beneficial alliances. Heretofore, scholarly emphasis has focused on teaching English to the Native students. This paper will analyze this variety of Indigenous languages spoken by Native students at the Brafferton during the early part of the 18th century until the time of the American Revolution and consider the impact of multilingualism on the Native and non-Native socio-cultural landscape of the era.
