My life in a chair: Narrative and identity in disability discourse

Dr. Leslie Cochrane, Senior Lecturer of English and Linguistics at the College of William & Mary

People with disabilities often live in geographic communities primarily made up of people without disabilities; people with visible physical disabilities often find their disability is salient to others even in situations where it is not relevant. In this talk, I explore identity construction around physical disability in English narratives, drawing on data from people who use wheelchairs. I highlight the ways in which participants tell about their wheelchair practices and understand themselves as members of a shared community.
