[PAST EVENT] UC Berkeley's Big Ideas @ WM
September 16, 2014
6pm - 7pm
In partnership with UC Berkeley and the USAID HESN Network, AidData is excited to announce the second year of the Big Ideas Competition at William and Mary.
The Big Ideas Competition challenges students to come up with innovative solutions to the world's most pressing problems. William and Mary students are eligible to apply to one of the following categories: Open Data for Development, Global Health, Food System Innovations, Mobiles for Reading, and Conflict & Development. The competition has seen tremendous success in the past, with many winners going on to turn their proposals into actual programs and tools all over the world. While it has historically remained on the University of California campuses, the contest is now open to a small number of other universities - including all currently enrolled students at the College of William and Mary.
In partnership with Big Ideas and USAID, AidData created the new Open Data for Development category for the challenge. This category challenges students to leverage publicly available datasets to develop big ideas across numerous sectors such as foreign aid, health, education, public safety, and transportation to address critical development challenges. Projects may focus on several areas, including but not limited to mapping visualizations, transparency and accountability feedback loops, crowd-sourcing tools, monitoring and evaluation applications, and spatial analysis.
Participants in the competition have an incredible opportunity to think creatively, connect with leaders in the field, and develop their ideas. Please join us on Tuesday, September 16th at 6 PM in Blow 201 for an opportunity to hear more about the competition, network with interested students, and learn more about the resources and support available to make your big ideas a reality. For more information about the challenge, you can access the official Big Ideas Website here, check out the attached flyers, or contact us at bigideas4wm@gmail.com.
The 5-page Pre-proposal deadline is on November 13th, so please don't hesitate to reach out to us for information and support!
