[PAST EVENT] Tenor Anthony Kearns returns to Kimball Theatre

April 8, 2017
7:30pm
Location
Kimball Theatre; 428 W. Duke of Gloucester St. in Williamsburg.

Kearns returns to Kimball Theatre Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. show. He will be accompanied by pianist David George during the near two-hour concert.

"He loves Williamsburg as well as Virginia and they seem to love him back. He sang the national anthem at a Redskins game, performed in Richmond, Norfolk, Virginia Beach and so many other places there. To him it symbolizes freedom, just like Ireland's independence 100 years ago," said Kirsten Fedewa, Kearns' agent.

Kearns has developed another connection to the area: a love for the United States military and government, both of which have a large presence on the Peninsula.
"In the United States, you move around freely and you have the freedom to do what you want to do and have a great quality of life and that comes at a price," Kearns said. "To give back, if I can be in a position to sing at an event to remember those people, I will be there. It's an amazing thing to see the flag flying and Americans take great pride in that flag, their military and their people."

In addition to performing with The Irish Tenors, who gained international fame when they were featured on a PBS special in 1998, Kearns is quite the accomplished solo artist, recently releasing his solo CD "With a Song in My Heart."

As a solo artist, he returned to PBS in November 2012, performing with the U.S. Air Force Band during a special "America's Veterans: A Musical Tribute."

Kearns refers to himself as just not an "Irish tenor" but just "tenor" because he performs in seven languages and interprets songs from several genres including classical, inspirational and operatic music.

Kimball Theatre program director Marianne Johnston said in an emailed statement that more than 250 people attended Kearns' last show at the Kimball two years ago, saying he draws a group of dedicated fans whenever he comes.

In 2013, he sang with the U.S. Army Band at a tribute for Medal of Honor Recipients and last year headlined a Veterans Day special for military members called "America Salutes You."

He has also performed for three U.S. presidents: George H. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.
