Jake Nelson is a Foreign Service Officer in the U.S. Department of State and currently serves as chief of the immigrant visa unit at the U.S. Embassy in Algiers, Algeria. In this role, he managed the Department?s processing of over 2,500 Yemeni immigration cases after the closure of the U.S. Embassy in Sana?a, for which he received a Superior Honor Award from the Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. He has previously served at the U.S. Mission to the European Union, the Office of the Secretary of State, and the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, where he helped lead the successful campaign for the United States? reelection to the UN Human Rights Council. He received a BA in French and Music from William & Mary in 2011 and an MA in European and Russian Studies from Yale University in 2014, where he was a Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellow and a Foreign Language and Area Studies grantee in German. He speaks Algerian and Modern Standard Arabic, French, and German
