[PAST EVENT] Becoming Allies & Advocates for a More Inclusive Workplace

VIMS - Davis Hall, Owens-Bryant Board Room7539 Spencer Road
Gloucester Point, VA 23062Map this location
In this workshop, we review foundational concepts for understanding and analyzing power dynamics related to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and other forms of inequality, oppression and marginalization. We also review the difference between individual level prejudice and more systemic level dynamics where the focus is on outcomes rather than intent. Importantly, we will distinguish being an ally and an active bystander or advocate. Toward these action-oriented outcomes, we will then present a continuum of four strategies for confronting situations of racism, sexism, etc., and then engage participants in active role-play to reconsider related situations from their own environments and/or hypothetical case studies. Participants will leave with a tool kit of strategies for being active bystanders and advocates.
This training will take place in-person in the Davis Hall Owens-Bryant Board Room. Attendees alternatively have the option of participating virtually. Total attendance is capped at 30 participants.
Please RSVP by October 13th.
