Headshot of the invited speaker, Junior Peña. Junior is a male with short, curly, black hair and full beard. He is wearing a blue shirt, light teal blazer, and a red-striped bow tie.

The Dive-In Committee (VIMS’ Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Steering Committee) is excited to welcome Junior Peña, Director of Student Diversity, Equity, and Belonging at Fitchburg State University.

In his current role, Junior develops comprehensive training around justice and liberation, advocates for LGBTQ+ support and services, facilitates identity-based dialogues, identifies ways to engage underserved students, and contributes to campus-wide equity and inclusion efforts. He also currently serves as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coordinator for the New England Region of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.

This keynote presentation will address the growing need for trauma-informed practice in supporting, mentoring, and engaging students. The session will explore integrating a trauma-informed approach as a professional tool rather than an addition to the workload. The presenter will provide tangible steps to engage meaningfully with students and identify how to establish a people-first, student-second community.
