The lecture will explore the career of Toshi Yoshida spanned over seven decades, examining how issues of national and personal identity interact with the marketplace for Japanese prints. In parallel to the upcoming exhibition "Tree to Mountain: The Woodblock Prints of Toshi Yoshida" at William and Mary Muscarelle Museum, it will examine his prints in relation to those by his father, Hiroshi Yoshida, and brother Hodaka Yoshida, as well as the leading landscape print-maker of the era, Kawase Hasui, the subject of another upcoming exhibition on modern Japanese prints, "Water and Shadow: Kawase Hasui and Japanese Landscape Prints" at the VMFA.
