[PAST EVENT] Philosophy Colloquium: Walter Sinnott-Armstrong (Duke), Too Much Morality? Lessons from Scrupulosity
Access & Features
- Open to the public
Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, Chauncey Stillman Professor of Practical Ethics at Duke University, will give a colloquium talk entitled, "Too Much Morality? Lessons from Scrupulosity." Sinnott-Armstrong has published widely on ethics (theoretical and applied as well as meta-ethics), empirical moral psychology and neuroscience, philosophy of law, epistemology, philosophy of religion, and informal logic. All interested are invited.
Paper Abstract: Did I do the right thing? Am I a good person? We all wonder sometimes about ourselves, but patients with Scrupulosity have pervasive and intrusive obsessions and compulsions based on deep anxiety over morality. This talk describes cases, explains the diagnosis and treatment, contrasts moral saints, and draw lessons about the nature of mental illness, moral judgment, and moral responsibility. (This talk is based on a 2019 book with Jesse Summers.)
