This Spring 2022 course counts as a geology elective, fulfills the requirements for the marine science minor field course, and includes a week-long fieldtrip to San Salvador Island in the Bahamas!

Prerequisites: Instructor permission or ONE of the following: GEOL 322, GEOL 325/BIOL 317, or MSCI 330

Field trip dates: May 22-31, 2022

Instructors: Rowan Lockwood and Linda Morse

In the classroom at W&M, students will learn the basics of marine ecology, paleontology, sedimentology, as well as Bahamian history, culture, and archaeology. In San Salvador, students will explore a number of marine and terrestrial environments, including coral reefs, sandflats, seagrass, tidal estuaries, limestone caves, blue holes, brackish water lakes, and more. In the final three days of the trip, students will tackle independent research projects focusing on shallow-water coral reefs, inland lake stromatolites, Pleistocene fossil deposits, and karst development.

All students must be able to swim and must have a valid passport
