Virginia Poetry Society Awards Ceremony and Reading: To celebrate the centenary of the Virginia Poetry Society, which was established at William & Mary in May 1923, the English Department will host the Society’s annual awards ceremony. Over two dozen awards will be given, and the recipients will read their poems. The Society’s North American Book Award will also be announced. The ceremony will be held in Tucker Hall Theater on Saturday, April 8, from 2 pm to 5 pm. It will be free and open to the public, and a reception will follow the readings.
More about the Virginia Poetry Society: In May 1923, a small group of poets, hoping to stimulate and foster an interest in poetry in the Commonwealth, met in the Chapel of the Wren Building at William & Mary. There they drew up a constitution and bylaws for the organization and named it The Poetry Society of Virginia. Since then, the Society has – through publications, readings by members and visiting poets, poetry events around the state, contests, workshops, in-school programs, poetry festivals, and other activities – helped to advance the appreciation of poetry throughout Virginia. The organization is instrumental in assisting the Governor of Virginia with the selection of Poet Laureate. An appointed committee makes recommendations to the organization’s elected President who then forwards nominations to the Governor for his final review and decision.
