The United States now faces a real prospect of fighting World War III with Russia, or China, or both powers at once. Yet just as this new reality has arrived, Americans have lost touch with the lived experience of World War II and the memory of superpower confrontation during the Cold War. Most Americans alive today are unused to enduring any hardship for foreign-policy choices, giving both ordinary citizens and political leaders little concept of how ruinous a great-power conflict might be. The country must undertake a national effort of historical recovery and imagination — to enable Americans to consider whether they wish to enter a major war if the moment of decision arrives, and to take appropriate actions to prevent such scenario from arising.
