Dr. Ajay Limaye from the Department of Environmental Science at the University of Virginia will be giving a seminar on rivers!

Talk title: Threads through time: River imprints on the past, present, and future of planets

Brief description:

Rivers play a central role in planetary processes past, present and future. Yet despite the ubiquity of river landforms – including bedrock canyons, meander bends, and deltas – fundamental questions persist regarding how these features develop, evolve, and respond to climate change. This talk will use three case studies to unravel the secrets of common river landforms with help from numerical models, laboratory experiments, and satellite remote sensing. Along the way, I will propose new ways to reconstruct past climate from the largest sediment fan on Mars, guide river restoration projects unfolding today, and improve forecasts for some of Earth’s most dynamic landscapes.
