The Department of Government is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the first annual Todd Weaver Study Abroad Scholarship. The scholarship, named to honor the memory of Todd W. Weaver, Class of 2008, who died in battle serving his country in Afghanistan on September 9, 2009.

Todd Weaver, a summa cum laude graduate of the College with a major in Government, was ROTC Cadet Commander at William & Mary and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In seeking to honor his memory, his family and friends undertook a fund-raising campaign to create an endowed scholarship. The campaign, with an original goal of $50,000 was met and exceeded in less than a year, due to the support of student organizations (especially SAAC), alumni and friends of the Weavers and the College, as well as others inspired by Todd?s service and sacrifice.

The College has now officially created the endowment fund, but the first funding would not be available until the 2012/2013 Academic Year. In order to begin the scholarship earlier, the Weavers have raised an additional sum of money to be used for a scholarship to be awarded at Homecoming 2011. Much of this money was raised through the sale of paintings by Jeanne Weaver, Todd?s mother. A collection of her paintings are currently on display in the Sadler Center.

The Scholarship is open to Government and International Relations majors to support study abroad in the Spring semester or the Summer of 2012. Applications for the $2500 scholarship for 2011/2012 are available in the Department of Government (Morton Hall room 10) and on the department?s website (www.wm.edu/government). Applicants will be asked to describe the travel to be supported by the scholarship, and to explain how the scholarship will enable them to reflect Todd?s desire to better understand the world and to be of service to people in other nations. Applications will be due by October 14 at 5 p.m.

The scholarship will be presented at the joint Homecoming reception of the Departments of Government and Economics and the programs in Public Policy and International Relations, held between 10 and 12 a.m. on Saturday, October 22 in Blow Hall 201. It is particularly fitting that October 22 is Todd Weaver?s birthday.
