Abstract: It has been known for a long time that there exists a deep and fruitful connection between single operator theory and the Hardy space of analytic functions on the unit disc. After giving an overview of this connection, I will explain how multivariate operator theoretic considerations lead one to leave the classical Hardy space behind in favor of a new family of analytic functions on the unit ball: the Drury-Arveson space. This fascinating space has been the subject of intense research in the last twenty years, and I will present some recent contributions to this program motivated by classification questions for commuting row contractions. More precisely, I will be interested in the possibility of achieving peak interpolation on subsets of the sphere using Drury-Arveson multipliers. (Joint work with Ken Davidson)
