Title:
?Yamasee Diplomacy and Daily Life?
Abstract:
Initial shovel-testing has located material remains from Yamasee Mission San Antonio in Pensacola, Florida. Ongoing comparisons of these materials to contemporary Yamasee missions in St. Augustine and earlier Yamasee towns in South Carolina reveal material changes within one group of people across time and space. Writings by Andres Escudero and other Yamasee leaders demonstrate Native American negotiation strategies including the use of titles and tattoos. Combined, archaeological and historical lines of evidence offer new insights into eighteenth-century daily life and diplomacy of Yamasees, including their geopolitical influence in the Southeast.
