The Araba of Modakeke and Ayodeji Ogunnaike will discuss the complicated history of religions in Southwestern Nigeria in the 20th-century. During this time, the various encounters between orisa traditions, Islam, and Christianity shaped and redefined the fundamental notions of "religion," "politics," "public" and "private" spheres of life in profoundly influential ways. Our two guests will also comment on the current relationships and conflicts amongst Christians, Muslims, and practitioners of indigenous traditions, such as Ifa.
