[PAST EVENT] Eating Problems in Autism Spectrum Disorders: What they are and what to do

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Problems with eating are common among children with autism spectrum disorders. In some cases, children refuse to eat entire food groups, placing them at risk from a variety of health problems secondary to their limited diets. Other children refuse foods completely and either drink liquid supplements or receive supplemental tube feedings. Still others eat too fast putting them at risk for choking or vomiting. Regardless of the type of eating problem experienced, there are adverse social implications for these children who are unable to eat with family and peers. In this workshop information detailing the range of feeding and eating problems found among children with autism spectrum disorders and discuss a variety of empirically-proven treatments for these problems.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Keith Williams, Ph.D., B.C.B.A-D
Keith is the Director of the Feeding Program at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. He is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Penn State College of Medicine. Keith?s clinical practice involves the treatment of children with a range of feeding problems. He also conducts research involving feeding problems and childhood nutrition. Keith is the co-author of Treating Eating Problems in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Developmental Disabilities as well as over 30 articles and book chapters.
Keith has a Bachelor?s degree in Psychology and Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts and a Doctoral degree in Applied Developmental Psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Keith is a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania and as well a Board Certified Behavior Analyst ? Doctoral Level.
