Performing Queerness in Singapore: Beyond Illiberal Pragmatism and Cane, with guest Zoom speaker Zihan Loo.
In this talk, Zihan shares his experience of reenacting Josef Ng's Brother Cane in 2012, and reflects on this reenactment post-repeal of Section 377A. He examines what it means for a segment of the queer community to finally get what we have been fighting for, and considers the cruel optimism of whether "what we desire is actually an obstacle to [our] flourishing" (Berlant). Through attending to the residual resistant strains of Cane, Zihan proposes alternatives to consider queer presence that move beyond a liberal humanist conception of the figure of the human, agential capacity, and notions of freedom.
