[PAST EVENT] "New Approaches to American Jews and Movie Making During WWII"
Professor Michael Berkowitz (Professor of Modern Jewish History at University College London) joins Professor Mary Fraser Kirsh in the Wren Building's Great Hall to discuss "New Approaches to American Jews and Movie Making During WWII."
It’s well known that Jews played an outsized role in the inception and running of the American movie business. Yet Hollywood Jews are largely unrecognized for filmmaking during the Second World War, as their key roles were kept under wraps. This talk focuses on the motion picture division of the Office of Facts and Figures, led by Leo Rosten and the moviemaking enterprises of the U.S. Army Signal corps. Among those who played key roles were Harpo Marx and Bud Schulberg.
