[PAST EVENT] Helping Students Become Self-Directed Learners
Access & Features
- Free food
- Registration/RSVP
The goal of this workshop is to explore how an understanding of self-regulation and the related topics of self-direction, metacognition, and "learning how to learn" can help faculty support students in taking more responsibility for planning, carrying out and evaluating their own learning. The workshop will cover specific strategies, tools and techniques that can be integrated with disciplinary content in undergraduate and graduate level classes.
The workshop will cover some ways that self-regulation strategies can help students get more from lectures and media, use tools like "exam wrappers" to move beyond grades in learning from tests and quizzes, and how to individualize the learning experience through the use of "specs grading." We'll also look at ways that advanced courses might use individualized learning contracts and learning plans to help students from dramatically different backgrounds build on their unique interests and experiences to maximize their learning in a course.
