[PAST EVENT] Dinner Roundtable Discussion: The Future of Birthright Citizenship and the Fourteenth Amendment

The Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution provides birthright citizenship, providing that: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” On January 20, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order, “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship,” challenging birthright citizenship, alleging that “the privilege of United States citizenship does not automatically extend to persons born in the United States.” Twenty-two states filed lawsuits, and a federal judge in the Western District of Washington issued a temporary restraining order on January 23 to block the executive order’s enforcement. This dinner conversation will allow for law experts at William & Mary Law School and constitutional law experts around the nation to engage in a conversation on the consequences of this executive order.
