In this presentation Prof. Augoustakis examines the role of lament in Statius’ lyric poems, the Silvae (late 1st century CE). By emphasizing the role of the father, Statius weaves a narrative in the Silvae that is different from his epic poem, the Thebaid; there grief and lamentation become a vessel for letting out the darkest side of human predisposition towards despotism. Through a different portrayal of death and lament, the Silvae present a more effective type of mourning, which, nevertheless, still pushes the limits and boundaries of decorum. Reception will follow.
