For students who have taken Chinese in high school or at another college or university, in-person placement consultations will take place beginning from 9:00-12:00 and 1:00-4:00 on Monday, August 26, 2019 in Washington Hall 316. Students will meet with faculty from the William & Mary program in Chinese Studies to discuss their previous language study and decide on appropriate placement. In some cases, students will take a short placement test.

Many students who have taken four years of Chinese in high school enroll in our Intermediate Consolidated Chinese courses (CHIN 205 and CHIN 206), which are designed for students making the transition to our Upper-Intermediate courses (CHIN 301 and CHIN 302). Others may find our regular Intermediate Chinese courses (CHIN 201 and CHIN 202) appropriate for their needs. For heritage learners, we offer a two-course sequence in Chinese for Heritage Speakers (CHIN 111 and CHIN 211); students who complete CHIN 211 will also fulfill William & Mary’s Foreign Language Proficiency (FLP) requirement.

If you have questions before your placement meeting in August, you are welcome to contact our program director, Prof. Michael Hill or the program’s placement coordinator, Prof. Su Qian. We look forward to meeting you!

*Please note that there will be an hour break from 12:00 to 1:00 pm during this process.
