[PAST EVENT] Faculty Research Brown Bag: Supporting Black Students through School-Community Partnerships

Community support for youth and adults represents a longstanding strength among Black families. Drawing from current work and seminal research, Assistant Professor of School Psychology Janise Parker will give a presentation summarizing why educators and researchers should be intentional about collaborating with predominately Black community organizations to support the development of Black K-12 students. A second aim of the presentation will discuss how interdisciplinary research and collaborative partnerships with community organizations can serve as a mechanism for applying theory to practice, with a specific focus on identifying “what works.”

Dr. Parker's research primarily focuses on student engagement and motivation among adolescents from underrepresented groups and culturally responsive practice in school psychology. She has much experience collaborating with high school educators to support at-risk youth from diverse backgrounds and providing counseling support in public schools for middle and high school students.
